What are the focal points of your work in the community?
The Flingern district shop in Düsseldorf is the first point of contact for many people and, as an institution commissioned by the Youth Office, provides concrete help in the form of low-threshold family counselling and family education. It networks the facilities in the district and supports the initiative and engagement of citizens. It first started its work back in 1982 by helping with homework and has since grown into a hub for interaction and advice, Gradually, offers were created for women, parents, children and all the people living in this neighbourhood. It not only offers German classes for migrant women, parent–child groups and sewing classes, but also provides advice to families and to older people at risk of falling into poverty. Residents are encouraged to shape their neighbourhood together and feel at home in Flingern. This includes celebrations, campaigns or even the provision of premises for self-organised groups from the district.
